Alternatives to Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy is a
major operation that many women wish to avoid. Alternatives to
hysterectomy are based on the problems that occur. Example are
ablation or resection of the uterine lining,
and
embolization
of a
fibroid.
 |
Watch the fibroids. You may not need
treatment. |
 |
Pain medication if needed. |
 |
Hormonal pills or shots and
iron may control bleeding. |
 |
Hysteroscopy for bleeding:
D&C can remove excess lining and
polyps.
Resection of some fibroids may preserve
fertility.
Ablation or resection of the uterine
lining may stop bleeding. |
 |
Shrink the fibroids:
Shrink fibroids using medication.
(temporary)
Shrink fibroids using myolysis.
(scope surgery)
Shrink fibroids using
embolization.
(radiology) |
 |
Myomectomy (removing fibroids):
Hysteroscopy (scope) if inside the cavity.
Laparoscopy (scope) if outside the muscle.
Laparotomy (open surgery) if inside
the muscle. |
