HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAM
(HSG)

A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an
x-ray of the uterus, tubes and peritoneal cavity. The uterine part of the x-ray
checks for scarring, polyps and fibroids. The tubal part checks for internal
damage to the tubes or for blockage at the ends. The peritoneal part checks to
be sure the dye leaves the tube and flows freely around the ovary and bowel.
The two major problems with this
test are cramps and infection. A combination of antibiotics and pain medication
can help control these. The pain medication are commonly both ibuprofen 600 mg
and light narcotics such as propoxyphene, hydrocodone or other similar
medication.
Please carry water and both
medications with you to the x-ray department. Take the Ibuprofen as you get
there and the other medication as you start changing clothes.
 |
Call when your
period (menses) begins. |
 |
We plan to do
the x-ray about day 6 to 10 of the cycle. |
 |
Consider
using antibiotics starting 1 day before the x-ray. |
 |
Carry a bottle
of water with you along with ibuprofen and other pain medication. |
 |
Take the
ibuprofen 600 mg when you check in. |
 |
Take the other pain
medication before you change clothes for the procedure. |
