Intrauterine Injection (IUI)
Artificial Insemination

Back Home Up Next

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) for abnormal mucus/sperm interaction has one and three month pregnancy rates of about 25% and 60%.  The one and three month rates are about 15% and 35% when used as a trial with no specific problem.  The rates are about 5% and 12% when treating sperm problems.

Inseminations are generally done with 1, 2 or 3 follicles developing.  Cycles are cancelled when 4 or more follicles are developing and can be cancelled with 2 or 3 if this concerns you.

Steps by Days of IUI Cycle

[1 to 3]  [3 to 5]  [7 to 18]  [9 to 18]  [10 to 18]

[12 to 18]  [Insemination]  [15 to 21]  [14 to 20]  [28 to 32]

bullet

Do a home pregnancy test.

bullet

Call to check possible dates to be sure that I will be in town and that we are ready for weekends if that occurs.

bullet

You may have a sonogram this day or the next day.

bullet

If the insemination may be done on a weekend, a sonogram is done on Friday.

bullet

An HCG injection is given the same day or the next day.

bullet

Insemination is done the same day or the next day, depending on the results of the sonogram or on prior history if on a weekend.

Day of Insemination

bullet

Collect the sperm specimen in a sterile container.

bullet

The sperm specimen takes 30 to 60 minutes to liquefy.  You will save time if you collect the specimen at home so that it will liquefy while you are driving in.  Please have the specimen in the office within 1 hour.

bullet

Ibuprofen or naproxen can help control cramps.  Take this when we start washing.

bullet

It takes an additional 75 minutes to wash and spin the specimen and allow the sperm to swim up.  You can leave the office during that time.

bullet

Insemination is like a Pap smear.  The sperm are placed with a small plastic tube.

bullet

You will be kept in a resting position for 10 minutes after the insemination.

bullet

Reserve sperm are kept in place with a plastic lined tampon.  The tampon should be removed in 30 minutes to two hours.

Days 15 to 21

bullet

Optional - Repeat sonogram in 2 days to check for luteinized unruptured follicle (LUF). This is most important in women over 42.

Return to top of page.

Days 14 to 20

bullet

Start progesterone on the second day after LH surge.  Progesterone may be taken as Prometrium pills, Crinone gel or progesterone injections.

Return to top of page.

Days 28 to 32

If it is positive, continue the progesterone for a total of 6 weeks.

bullet

If it is negative, stop the progesterone.  Your period should starts in two days.
