Medial Deviation of Ureters
and Broad Ligament Pockets

The ureter is the medial margin of a broad ligament pocket or hernia in up to 100% of
large upper broad ligament defects. Medial deviation of the
ureter occurs in at least 25% of these. This does not include
small pockets near the uterosacral ligaments.
These
examples show right broad ligament pockets or hernias in two patients. The
ureter is the medial margin in both examples. The ureter is in the
mid-broad ligament in the first example. There is medial displacement of
the right ureter to the uterosacral ligament in the second example. The
left ureter is in a normal position in that example.
